the white flowers are in terminal panicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basil is grown around the world and is subspontaneous in many warm countries but it cannot stand frost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It grows easily indoors but need a good sunlight (or artificial light).<br>Ocimum micranthum = Ocimum campechianum is found the West Indies, greater antilles, parts of central and south america. \u00ab\u00a0Petit framboisin\u00a0\u00bb in French, albahaca del monte in spanish speaking countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ocimum gratissimum is native to Africa, Madagascar and Southeast Asia but is found now in many tropical regions (included pacific islands).<br>It has many local names, for example : grand framboisin in French, scent leaves in Nigeria, nunu bush in Jamaica, ebe-amwonkho in Edo, tchayo in Fon, efirin in Yoruba, a\u00f1yeba in Igala, daidoya in Hausa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is a perennial plant fairly invasive, a shrub up to 2-3 meters, very resistant to drought and non eaten by grazers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"326\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.phytomania.com\/herbal-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/basilicbuissonptcomp.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.phytomania.com\/herbal-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/basilicbuissonptcomp.jpg 326w, https:\/\/www.phytomania.com\/herbal-medicine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/basilicbuissonptcomp-245x300.jpg 245w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 326px) 100vw, 326px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The plant gives off a strong odor especially in full heat; the flowers are small, white, grouped in terminal panicles, the foliage very aromatic is green to gray-green.<br>BASIL OCIMUM BASILICUM OCIMUM MICRANTHUM OR CAMPECHIANUM OCIMUM GRATISSIMUM PLANTS ANTISEPTIC ESSENTIAL OIL<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dried Ocimum basilicum (common basil) leaves contain a minimum of 0.25% essential oil, depending on the cultivation conditions the content varies and can reach 2% of the dry weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Basil essential oil composition :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Indian Ocean basil contains mainly estragole with other terpenes in small quantities (cineole, fenchol, linalool and methyl eugenol);<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>European basil contains more linalool or methyl eugenol.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ocimum micranthum and gratissimum contains comparatively more essential oil, up to 5% of the dry weight, whose composition also varies according to the geographical origin or the cultivar:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>in Africa thymol dominates,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in the Pacific regions and south-east Asia eugenol is predominant.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The properties of essential oils , are related to their chemical composition and therefore variables:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Eugenol and methyl eugenol are anti-inflammatory, slow platelet aggregation , locally anesthetic and antibacterial ,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the other terpenes regulate digestive functions: eupeptic, carminative, anti-gastralgic and antispasmodic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In aromatherapy the basil essential oil is described as a sympathomimetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some components of basil essantial oil are potentially toxic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>estragole has been shown to be hepatocarcinogenic in mice,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and some estragole derivatives are even more toxic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>As always, we should not consider essential oils as harmless drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">USES<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The common basil is mainly a spice used very fresh and not cooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ocimum in general are used in perfumery (especially flowers), for example: \u00a0\u00bb Miri Monoi\u00a0\u00bb in Polynesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The basil tea ( infusion of fresh leaves) :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>calms gastric pains, digestive migraines, dyspepsia in general,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>it is a tonic by adrenal stimulation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>slightly diuretic,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>useful in cases of viral fever (\u00ab\u00a0flu-like\u00a0\u00bb affections, common fevers),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and post-infectious \u00ab\u00a0fatigue\u00a0\u00bb.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The tea of Ocimum micranthum and gratissimum (infusion of fresh leaves and flowers) is also diuretic and anti-dyspeptic but the presence of eugenol in quantity makes it less pleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ocimum gratissimum essential oil in oral hygiene and in dentistry :<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>application with a cotton pad , directly on the decayed or painful tooth (waiting for a proper treatment),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>mouthwash and gargle in case of gingivitis or angina, a few drops of essential oil in a glass of warm water.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>More anecdotal, some therapists advocate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the concentrated decoction of basil in application to fight against hair loss and to calm the bites of insects,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>powder of dried basil leaves in case of chronic rhinitis, 1 pinch morning and evening,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the juice obtained by the expression of 2 to 3 fresh and crushed leaves serves as eye drops, it is applied directly on the irritated eye (South America and West Indies),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>often in case of fever, Amazonian Indians use balneotherapy with an infusion of plants;
